Re: Is Atheism A Religion?

re·li·gion
   /rɪˈlɪdʒən/
–noun
1. a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, esp. when considered as the creation of a superhuman agency or agencies, usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs.
2. a specific fundamental set of beliefs and practices generally agreed upon by a number of persons or sects: the Christian religion; the Buddhist religion.
3. the body of persons adhering to a particular set of beliefs and practices: a world council of religions.
4. the life or state of a monk, nun, etc.: to enter religion.
5. the practice of religious beliefs; ritual observance of faith.
6. something one believes in and follows devotedly; a point or matter of ethics or conscience: to make a religion of fighting prejudice.
7. religions, Archaic . religious rites.
8. Archaic . strict faithfulness; devotion: a religion to one's vow.

a·the·ism
   /ˈeɪθiˌɪzəm
–noun
1. the doctrine or belief that there is no god.
2. disbelief in the existence of a supreme being or beings.

By the definition religion believes in super natural while atheism disbelieves. So atheism may be a way of life but not a religion.

Yea, I think atheism could be considered a religion, they do believe that there isn't a god? But everyone has what they think of as how we came to be, or what will happen after death; or something along those lines so why not?

It's not the religion that causes wars, it's the men who use religion as a means to control people that do.

Re: Official Religion Debate Thread

There's a lot of religions that don't believe in a god or goddess.
Some believe in souls of trees, some believe in the sun, some believe in no God, but it's still a religion, like Buddhism.

I'd say most believe in the sun.

Re: Official Religion Debate Thread

Well, the reason why I stopped posting in this thread is because people were saying that sun = son. This is not the case. I'm pretty sure English is the only language in the world that has the two words that sound or are spelled similarly.
So, if that's what you're implying, then let's please not talk about that. I didn't post in this thread; my original thread was merged...

Re: Official Religion Debate Thread

I realize it was merged, but no, I'm not that ignorant to assume "sun" is "son". I'm merely identifying with the circle of life.

Re: Official Religion Debate Thread

let me guys hit you with this. i have not read anything in this thread yet.
in my eyes, religion is basically just a way that they used to create order back in the day, nothing more nothing less, and it has been carried and has been adopted as a normality for today's society. that being said, many of my friends are satanic, some just for the sake of freaking people out. i can't believe you didn't even put that up as an option.. or the flying spaghetti monster..

Re: Official Religion Debate Thread

I left Satanic out because there's far more people who align with the other choices I mentioned, but "other" definitely works. The flying spaghetti monster is definitely an agnostic God though.
