Popup Blockers

This is a re-post from my blog but I wanted to get opinions on the subject and I didn't feel like retyping:

Browser Popup Blockers

When Did They Stop Working?

I don't know about you. But I remember the browsers of today when they where just barley starting to get awesome. I remember when I first found out about Firefox's and Opera's tabs. And how much more feature packed and stable they where then Internet Explorer. Which at the time was really the only browser Windows users used other than Netscape. Which was quite popular. But not nearly as much as IE.

But one of the biggest features for me was the popup blockers that where built into these third party browsers. They did a great job of blocking popups. Pretty much any popup was blocked. And you had to authorize them one by one. And you could set certain sites to allow all popups. That feature is still in today but they don't seem to work as well. Today they seem to only block around twenty percent of the popups. Which gets annoying. Especially because they used to work so well.

Although there are extensions to most browsers today that are adding this popup blocking awesomeness back, this is only in response to the browser failing to do so. And I still have no idea why the quality of built in popup protection has decreased.

Re: Popup Blockers

I do lol. Chrome seems worse. I had been getting them so I got AdBlocks popup block extension and it seems to be doing great. Mostly all the popups I have been getting where for damn E-Cigarettes. Anyway something must be up or these extensions for blocking them wouldn't exist.

Re: Popup Blockers

Evidently you've never heard of ABP and Easylist/Fanboy's List. Never seen a popup/ad for quite some time. More importantly I don't even notice the 30 second ads during those shows that you stream.

As for why the browser doesn't already have popup blocking like that built in? I don't know, but I prefer a 3rd party addon that would be immune to getting paid off by viagra or cialis to let their ads slip by.

Re: Popup Blockers

I have ABP And I am subscribed to Easylist. I still see them. Which made me search for a pop up blocker addon. If ABP already blocked everything they would not have a pop up blocker addon module for ABP.

"By default, Firefox or Adblock Plus doesn't block any pop-ups that are opened on mouse clicks or other user events. This addon complements Adblock Plus with the pop-up blocking functionality."

How do you pay off an open source browser? lol. And I would say that a 3rd party addon is even less immune as the source is not open and cannot be examined.

Lol, it was good point!! Illumanti did it! But really, I really haven't seen a popup in I don't remember how long. Theres maybe the occasional ad that pops up in my browser like the stupid Antivirus 2011 ones or what not, but I'd say the success rate for me is much closer to 90-95%. I guess try and make sure firefox/ABP is up to date and sub to both Easylist & Fanboy. Thats what I do and haven't had a problem since then.
