I've been using my little triad of anti-virus/malware/spyware for a while now, and it's worked well.

AVG free
Spybot - SnD
AdAware

Spybot and AdAware don't get along the best, but if you run them separately it's just fine.

I also use CCleaner to get rid of the stupid crap that gets your computer running all slow.

Spybot has deteriorated from being a top choice in recent years but it's still amazingly reliable for most users.
