[Tutorial] - Running PS1 Games on Custom Firmware

*****************************************************
DarkPacMan77's Tutorial for PS1 Emulation on Custom Firmware
*****************************************************

This is a brief tutorial. This tutorial is written as if you already have a custom firmware installed on your psp that is capable of playstion 1 emulation. Please do not ask questions regarding the installation of custom firmware in this thread. The FAQ is colored in green, and the sub-tutorial for using your own ps1 games for this process is in dark red at the bottom of the page. Enjoy! ;)

1.)Download cygwin1.dll and place it in c:/windows/system32 folder on your computer.
this should work ::: http://www.dlldll.com/cygwin1.dll_download.html
2.)Download popstation*
*There are several versions of popstation. Some include features that allow you to customize the icon in the
xmb, others do not. This tutorial does not cover how to add those files.

3.)Download Hotshots Golf 2 (ps1 game)
4.)On desktop, make a new folder and title it "Popstation"
5.)In winrar/ winzip, open up hotshots2.iso (It must be a ISO, BIN or IMG file). This is obtainable through the ps3 download
store legally, and online illegally. I will not tell you how to download the game online for this reason.
6.)Extract KEYS.BIN file to the Popstation folder.
7.)Extract the hotshots.iso (It must be a ISO, BIN or IMG file) to the Popstation folder.
8.)Rename the .pbp for Hotshots 2 as "BASE.PBP" (I used capital letters).

***You should have the following files in your Popstation folder***

~BASE.PBP
~KEYS.BIN
~popstation.exe
~PopStation GUI
~Readme.txt (optional)

Any other files are files that you can delete.

***Continue if that information is accurate, if not, backtrack***
_________________________________________________________________

***At this time, Popstation is fully ready to use***

9.)Download a ps1 game (It must be a ISO, BIN or IMG file)
***** see note at bottom of page for using your old ps1 discs! *****
10.)After file is downloaded, use winrar/winzip to open the ps1 game.
11.)Extract ONLY the ISO, BIN or IMG file, leave all other files alone (if it came with others).
12.)Place ISO, BIN or IMG file in the Popstation folder located on the desktop.
13.)Open PopStation GUI
14.)Browse to your ISO, BIN or IMG playstation 1 file and click "open".
15.)Convert the ISO, BIN or IMG with PopStation

***PopStation may take several moments to finish this task***

When PopStation finishes converting the ISO, BIN or IMG file, it will close automatically.
In order to make the game playable on the PSP, a few small steps must be taken.

16.)Open up your PopStation folder (if it isn't already open)
17.)Connect your psp to your computer or use a card reader.
18.)Navigate to x:/PSP/GAME folder and make a new folder there. Name the folder the title of the game you converted with
PopStation. (for easy reference)
19.)Place your EBOOT.PBP into the folder you made in step 18
20.)Copy the KEYS.BIN file from your PopStation folder into the folder you made in step 18.

***Your psp is ready to be disconnected from usb/card reader***

21.)Load the playstation 1 game from the psp menu and ENJOY!!!

F.A.Q (taken from popstation readme.txt and extended) *****************************************************

Q: My game generated is a lot higher in size than the same one from ps3store...
A: They use compression. Because the algorithm of compression is not still reversed, compressed
isos are not supported yet.

Q: I have my game in bin/cue...
A: use the bin as the iso.

Q: I have my game in img/ccd...
A: Use the img as the iso.

Q: The savegames have the icon of Hot Shots 2!!!
A: It's normal. Don't worry.

Q: The game icon has a Hot Shots 2 picture/icon!!!
A: This is normal. If you want to change the backgroung and/or icon, download "pspbrew" and edit the EBOOT.PBP

Q: I copied my EBOOT.PBP and the KEYS.BIN file to the folder I made, but it won't load properly!
A: Turn off psp. Hold the R-Trigger button and while holding, turn on the psp. Recovery mode will load. Go into
"configuration ->". Click on "Game folder homebrew (currently xxxxx) and hit the X button again. This will
change how your psp will load the EBOOT.PBP. If you still have problems, reread step 18 and follow along
carefully.

This is a short tutorial for using your ps1 games that you already own and playing them on the psp.
**********************************************************************************

1. Download CloneCD - available for 21 day free trial (there are cracks for it) http://www.slysoft.com/en/clonecd.html
2. Install CloneCD and open it.
3. Place your playstation 1 game into the computer.
4. Choose the first option on CloneCD "read to image file" and select your game/ where the file will be stored on your hard drive
5. After the game is copied to your computer, place the Game.img file in your popstation folder. Convert it to EBOOT.PBP with popstation, then return to my tutorial for further instructions at step 16 ;)

Instead of clone cd Id reccomend alcohol 120%.
Nice tutorial. And for the files from hotshots, if you want all the files (gui) to easily convert your PS1 games for PSP compatibility, just PM me,
for other things, read this tutorial.

I decided to leave the custom icon jazz out of this tutorial, b/c without actually getting the game to work, the average person doesn't understand why they would want to customize it.

I also have alcohol 120%. Great program, however, if you have ever used CloneCD, it is easier for this.

I think you only click the mouse 2-3 times and it is working with CloneCD. Simple and quick. Alcohol 120% is nice/ more options and such, but I like to keep it simple when I can (especially when writing a tutorial) ;)

thanks for the feedback

Wouldnt if they have it on the PSP already, then want to get a customizer/GUI? Because then they would find out why the icon will get annoying

Yes, but I think that doing it that way is better.... like... how do I explain...

I think that by helping people do things, and making them understand what they are doing, is better than telling them simply how to fix something b/c it gives them knowledge that they can carry into the next thing they are doing.

I have been using popstationgui...Apparantly it creates the keys.bin already so you dont have to download hot shots...and it has a normal ps1 icon...BUT, I can't seem to get my castlevania to work...I will try your way but I thought maybe one of you guys would have a suggestion...and another question...whats the cygwin1.dll for? just curious...Thanks

cygwin1.dll is a registry file that enables popstation to work. Now, I had originally wrote this tutorial to fit the very first popstation that had a GUI lol, so I'm sure newer ones have been made. If you have one that automatically places the KEYS.BIN where it needs to be, then the program might have automatically installed the cygwin file. Now, your errors might also be because the game is just not compatible. We don't have a compatibility list here, but you can find them. I know of one on psp-hacks's forums that I have used in the past.

I also experienced problems with my ps1 emulator when I used a custom font. So if you have one, I'd remove it.

You should always try to download an NTSC version of the game, and NOT a PAL version. There are converters to change to and from PAL and NTSC but the best thing to do is just download a NTSC from the start.

I myself am now looking into compressing my ps1 games... if I find it a little tough, I think I will write a tutorial for it (maybe add it on to this one).

There are still plenty of people that use the older processes though. I will keep this up for a few more weeks then probably just delete it (unless instructed otherwise).
