.FLAC Audio files?

I just got a soundtrack but instead of a bunch of MP3's the file format is .FLAC. What the hell are they? They work fine with VLC, but I'm guessing they won't on an MP3 player. Can I convert them somehow?

If you have a music program, just open it up in there then click "save as" and change the format to .mp3. I use a music program called wavepad.
