You should know what to do
Just make sure to get the 1.50 plugin for 4.01 as well.

Just upgrade to 4.01m33-2, its the latest and greatest (In my opinion). Simply use the same method you originally used to install CFW, and then update to 4.01m33

Pretty much as soon as a new Sony update comes out for the psp, a custom firmware soon follows it. I've been away from the scene myself for almost a year now. My only suggestion is don't upgrade for the wrong reasons. Take a look at the newer custom firmware features and decide if it's worth the upgrade or if you're happy staying with 3.52 M33. (If it ain't broke, don't fix it)

As for upgrading, I remember before I lost interest in my psp... 3.52 m33 was required to update to 3.71 m33. I'm not sure but maybe some of the members can shed some light on this if it's required to have 3.71 m33 to update to 4.01 m33? I also remember that you needed a program called e-loader. Is that program still required? And of course the 1.50 kernel plugin which was already mentioned.

I'm at 3.90 M33-3, and so far, I think it works great, and is very stable.
They have a neat plugin called CXMB for 3.90

It enables the use of CTF flash themes, which lessen the hassle (and risk) of changing your theme. Also has other very nice features.
But, good luck on whichever CFW you plan on upgrading to.

I went from 3.80 M33 to 4.o1 M33-2 with no problems using Catb50's MMS.

Really is it just for 3.90? I'm running it just fine on 4.01.
