I've been wondering about this for months. What's the purpose of the PSP directory of having three GAME folders? They are:
1. GAME
2. GAME4XX
3. GAME150
Can someone explain in layman terms the purpose of having these three folders and where everything must go, meaning which games or tools work better with what folder?
Thanks in advance.

GAME150 = 1.50 Kernel
GAME = 1.50 or 3.XX/4.XX Kernel(User Option)
GAME4.XX/3.XX = 4.XX/3.XX Kernal

One folder can be set to 1.50 Kernal, or 3.xx/4.xx kernal.

You have 2 kernels on your psp. think of kernels as the firmware type. say you're running 4.01 m33, you'll have the 4.01 firmware as well as the 1.50 that you installed as an add-on. Game150 will run anything that is designed for homebrew since 1.50 is the only golden firmware that ever ran homebrew without any modifications. Game will run anything designed for your 1.50 firmware as well as 4.01 firmware (although in the past it was used strictly for psx eboots). Game401 will only run stuff designed for the 4.01 firmware.

No, that would be 1.0. 1.50 required you to patch the eboot using KXPloit, or hope that the Dev's made it in 1.50 Kernel.

Thanks for the clarification guys.. Very much appreciated.
Recently when I got my new 8GB stick, when I formatted it, I discovered it automatically put those three folders in the PSP directory. So I was really wondering, what's the need for three similar named folders.
