[Tutorial]Wii SNES emulation (UPDATED, now with convenience)
As far as Wii homebrew has come, emulation has become one of my Wii's primary features. With the Homebrew channel, brewers can store multiple apps on their SD card and run them at their pleasure. This tutorial will tell you (yes you!)
This process involves running code not made or endorsed by Nintendo. ANY issues that arise from the use of this tutorial are not the fault of myself, brewology.com or the brew network staff, or Nintendo. Ensure that you know what you are doing before preforming the hack or running the emulator.
1: Necessary materials:
A Wii, firmware version must be below 3.4
A copy of Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess*
An SD card, should be formatted as FAT16 (called FAT by Vista and XP)
Gamecube controller or Classic controller
SNES roms, (Do not ask for these here!)
The emulator itself (I'll explain that later)
(*: If you don't have the Homebrew Channel installed first)
2: Setup
Once you have those, you must run the twilight hack and install the Homebrew Channel. It's a fairly basic process, brentbrizzle tells you how to do the process here. Once you've put the channel on your Wii, you must get the emulator. Create a folder called snes9x on the root of the SD card, and put a folder called saves and another called roms inside (place your roms there).
3: Getting your emulator of choice
At this point, check to make sure your Homebrew Channel is fully updated and functional and that you've put the proper folders on your SD card. Got it? Good.
. Go to 3a if you have wi-fi or a wired connetion, or 3b if you don't have internet on your Wii
3a: IF YOU HAVE WI-FI OR A WIRED CONNECTION
Now download the Homebrew Browser from this link, and copy the included files to your SD card. This program isn't necessary, but it expedites getting applications onto your card. Once its on your card, run it, and let it load. The web-page like interface shows all applications from the currently selected category, arranged from newest to oldest. Find a SNES9X version that's somewhat new, and click download.
3b: IF YOU DO NOT HAVE WI-FI OR WIRED CONNECTION
You must download the apps of your choice from our downloads section or the Brewpack generator. Once you've got your apps, extract them and manually place them on your card. PROTIP: Most apps are zipped up in a way that you can extract them to the root of the SD and merge the included folders and existing folders.
4: Running the emulator
Once you have all of your apps and files, launch the Homebrew Channel, select your emulator, and let it load. Most new emulators now have auto-save/auto-load, so no more entering 4 different menus when setting up a game,
. Loading games and changing settings is usually explained in the included READ-ME files, but the motions are usually the same. On the first start-up, you usually need to change your settings, which are good at their defaults. Pressing Home while playing a game brings up the emulator menu.
Final
Hopefully, everything will work for you. The twilight hack requires no physical modifications, and you can apply the setup procedure to any other program for the Wii.
