Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Linux Kernal has been around since like the early 90's. And Ubuntu was built on the debian project code. Ubuntu wasn't built from the base up since 2004, the kernal was already developed a decade before hand.

I'd also like to point out yall are some serious fan boys >.<

Linux is pretty sweet, and is going in the right direction considering this statement:
On 9 September 2009, with version 2.6.31, Linux became the first operating system kernel to support USB 3.0.Source
It just isn't as mainstream as Windows due to illiterate computer consumers and retailers that don't know what an Operating System is, or still think when you refer to the computer you are talking about the monitor, and refer to the computer as the "tower".

@Da Cool Man:
Not all graphic designers use Macs. That's a common misunderstanding. Apple insists thy it's true so they put out commercials and stuff to make people think it's true. The reality is more use PC's and some use Linux. This guy told me Mac's are better because Cars awas made on a Mac.... Well, Cloverfield was made on a PC.
The reason why graphic designers would use PC's is that it can use Photoshop and you can get the same specs for a less price.
Anything you can do on a Mac, you can do on a PC for cheaper. (Usually faster, too)

And... Anyone here have any USB 3.0 hardware? The first 3.0 flashdrive just now
came out. :z Who cares?

No, you're cutting my scentances into two parts and analyzing them.
I said you can get Photoshop cheaper. Look at this:
Price of PC + Price of Photoshop < Price of Mac + Price of Photoshop
Now, if you're getting 100 computers, each with Photoshop, which will you buy if the outcome is exactly the same?

Some of you guys are looking at the whole OS debate in the wrong way. First off, take piracy out. Not many people pirate software, and companies simply CANNOT.

Before you even think of the home user, you need to think of companies. Linux won't be used for company use. It doesn't have the hardware support that windows has, and it doesn't have the administration control that windows has.

Macs are perfect for smaller companies, like small design companies. The user can't mess up as many settings as you really can with windows, so its not hard to administer. Plus, as I've said before and what Mac is known for, you pick up ANY accessory that says "made for mac" and its just going to work.

Windows isn't very far from the just going to work concept. Windows 7 has so much driver support that you are going to find most accessories, new and old, will be very plug and play.

Now enter the home user. You want that plug and play component. You want your consumer to go into a store, pick something off the shelf, and when they get home have it just work. Any advantage that Linux has is thrown out the window when you think about the average consumer. Linux is nice to tweak and customize. It's very lightweight so it's good for things like netbooks. Good base for Google Chrome OS or building an HTPC. But it's only good for these advanced uses, things most people simply don't do.

Yes, there are many things that can be done on all 3 platforms. But most things can just be done more easily on PC's and Macs that can be done on Linux. But we need linux in the background. Maybe someday it will come up and be more of a popular option. So it needs to hang in there and continue to be developed otherwise it will REALLY only be Windows and OSX.

Actually, when looking at Linux, you have to realize that a lot of products are based off of it. Most MP3 players run it, the Mylo does, and even those touch screen game system things that are set up at bars.
So, Linux plays a big role, but it's not given the correct recognition it deserves. I like how Brent acknowledges this.

When you say things like, ""made for mac" and its just going to work" then you have to consider the percentage of devices that actually say that. What's the percentage that says, "Designed for XP"? There's more out there. Yeah, there's a small fraction of crapware that won't, like my brother's Engrish MP4 player, but it's minute.

My short opinion...

Windows reigns supreme because it is used the most and there is so much software and games written for it. Mac is really cool but its expensive as hell! Linux is great, its free and can be pretty stable, but there needs to be a lot more work on it before it will be widely used.
